Inspiring places: The New Craftsmen in Mayfair and Fiera Magazine launch in London

Hello All,

Hope you are well and enjoying the summer.

Apologies for less frequent posts, but I’m currently focusing on looking for a day job (I know, tough world!).

Last Thursday I had a pleasure to attend the official launch party for Fiera Magazine, an independent print magazine discovering new talent at the world’s design fairs. The magazine is being set up by Katie Treggiden, well-known for her excellent blog Confession of a Design Geek, and mag Culture’s Jeremy Leslie.

The party was a big success thanks to the lovely crowd (all very keen and into design) and the location.
The New Craftsmen shop in Mayfair

The New Craftsmen was founded in December 2012, but their new shop has just been opened at the heart of London. The place is small but full of character; originally built in the 19th century as a workshop for leather breeches makers.

The New Craftsmen currently represents a network of over 75 makers working in textiles, silverware, furniture, ceramics, jewellery, glassware and so on.

I had a quick chat with one of co-founders Natalie Melton who confirmed that the shop itself showcases and sells only a selection pieces from British makers and any special commissions that potentially can attract buyers and collectors of bespoke work.

My favourite, however, were the woolen toys and all animal-related craft pieces. The bear reminded me of my childhood hero Miś Uszatek.

Have you been to The New Craftsmen before? What did you think?

Have a good week.

Inspiring places: Home for Now

I’m so glad that April saw the launch of two interior books I was looking forward to.

Last week I reviewed the Bright Bazaar book, and this week I’m going to share my thoughts about Home for Now by Joanna Thornhill.

I’ve been following Joanna’s blog for over a year now, so I was very keen to get hold of her first book as I love her writing style and share the same experience of redecorating our first homes. Her passion for interior design is evident, and I find her tone of voice very personal and amusing.

Home for now review from secretgardenhome

Joanna wanted to inspire the whole generation of renters to transform, often dull and restricted dwellings, into beautifully designed homes, on a budget.

The author encourages both renters and budget conscious first time-buyers to use their imagination and flair to experiment with interiors and learn how to bypass the limitations, especially with regards to the rented accommodation.

She takes the readers through living rooms, kitchens and dining areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices (I’m currently working on my study, so it’s a very useful chapter) and outdoor areas showing numerous examples of clever interior solutions and hints & tips.

My favourite, however, are how to sections where Joanna is motivating us to take up craft and upcycling by simplifying each step and making it less daunting.

The book is beautifully written and laid-out with the images being inspiring and bringing all the key points to life. I love the font used throughout as well.

I just wish I had this book when I was renting in London.

Let me know what you think when you read it?

Pimped up fridge

Hello All,

Hope your Sunday is super sunny. It feels like spring is coming soon. Hurry up!

Last year I started thinking of revamping our old and pretty boring fridge. I had a couple of ideas, but eventually decided to go for Stickygram.

It’s very easy, and not too expensive. You just upload your Instagram photos, and they send you small fridge magnets. They look pretty good, don’t you think?

They bring all the positive emotions, and I get to look at them every day.

As I had few pictures I love that are pre-Instagram, I used Photobox for slightly bigger magnets. I’m planning to keep adding to this photo gallery.

What do you think? How does your fridge look like?

Have a wonderful Sunday!

Copper lamp by day and night

Hello Dear All,

What a week! Glad it’s over! Time to relax and unwind.

Our living room is getting better and better. Recently, we bought 2 copper table lamps from John Lewis, which fit perfectly into the overall scheme.

Our open shelves are finally being filled…It’s such a relief to get rid of some of the boxes after 2 years of storing books and memorabilia. Hurray!

What do you think of the copper trend this year?

Have a lovely weekend!
